Black Sea Glass Necklace
From our Hampton's Sea Glass collection, an exceptional piece of genuine black sea glass draws the eye on this timeless and elegant gold filled necklace. This tiny treasure of the sea is framed within a gold filled wire wrapped encasing and is connected to a gold-filled toggle clasp. The unique pendant measures 1.5 x 1 inch, and suspend from 20 Inches of handmade, fancy filigree link chain.
Sea glass collectors near and far will appreciate the exuberance I felt when I spotted this piece tumbling about the surf during a beach walk at celebrated Cooper's Beach in Southampton, New York. Smoothed to perfection by the sands of time, this very special shard of black sea glass is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen.
Black sea glass is notably scarce, and is one of the hardest to find across the broad spectrum of colored sea glass that remains. It is widely believed that only 1 out of every 3500 pieces of sea glass discovered will be black! With limited production dating as far back as the 1700s, black glass bottles were used to package medicines and other liquids that would spoil if exposed to light. This particular shard's thickness, jet black color and smooth-as-silk rounded edges suggest an origin around 200 years ago!
